Testing

A thorough examination supported by sophisticated testing enables us to accurately diagnose your condition. During the initial examination, we listen to your concerns, take your medical history, and perform a complete ocular exam. If necessary, we’ll consult with your referring physician to learn more about your condition. Sometimes, more specialized tests —many of which can be done in our office — are required to determine an accurate diagnosis.

Ultrasound is used to detect hidden problems — like a detached retina — when cataracts, hemorrhage, or other conditions obscure a direct look. This procedure is essential to the diagnosis and management of ocular tumors.

Using specialized cameras, we photograph the retina and the blood vessels that nourish it. Flourescein angiography helps us to identify points of leakage or blockage in the eye’s blood vessels. Flourescein is an iodine-free dye that we intravenously inject. The dye’s reflective properties allow us to photograph it as it passes through the retina’s blood vessels. We use computer imaging to view and interpret the test immediately.

OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) is also used for diagnostic imaging. OCT enables real time imaging of ocular structures or pathology with high resolution.

Electroretinography (ERG) and electroculography (EOG) are used to measure the electrical output of the retina, much the same as an EEG is used to measure brain waves. On occasion, these tests are used to assess retinal health or diagnose hereditary retinal disease. We may also need CAT scans, other x-rays, or blood tests; these will be performed at a local hospital or outpatient facility.
